Wireless Mesh Network Technologies: Architectures, Protocols, Resource Management and Applications
by Prof. Dr. Eugen Borcoci

The wireless mesh networks (WMN) emerge as a significant technology for next generation networks. They provide attractive local and metropolitan area broadband wireless access (BWA), highly efficient and suitable to support a large range of applications for residential, communities and enterprise environments. WMNs offer a range of benefits over traditional wired and wireless networks:  low deployment costs, high scalability and resiliency to faults. The tutorial discusses the key WMN aspects, emphasizing both the current state of the art, standards and future trends. Basic architectures are presented and new solutions, including technologies such as IEEE 802.11, 802.16, 802.15, etc. and also hybrid architectures. Focus will be on layer two and above, related protocols, resource management, mobility, routing, directional antennas aspects and cross layer optimisations.
The following specific topics will be discussed:

  • WMN Introduction
  • Basic architectures and intrastructures
  • WMN deployment and applications
  • Standard technologies: IEEE 802.11, 802.16, 802.15
  • Basic PHY technologies
  • MAC layer issues: scheduling, channel assignment, protocols, Multi-RAT
  • Directional and smart antennas issues
  • WMN multi-hop routing
  • Cross layer optimisations: L1, L2, L3
  • Resource management and control, traffic management, QoS
  • Mobility management: micro and macromobility, Media Independent Handover
  • Security issues in WMNs
  • WMN Scalability and resiliency
  • Hybrid solutions for WMNs
  • WMN integration in end to end architectures
  • Future trends, new standards and open issues
